Floods in Ladakh

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

Torrential rains unleashed a natural fury on the fragile north India Himalayan region of Ladakh on August 6, 2010. The death, injury and destruction from the resulting catastrophic floods and mudslides have brought challenges to the people of Ladakh like few times in their ancient history.

This is the greatest human tragedy in the history of Ladakh. The beautiful and peaceful land has been reduced to a dreadful graveyard and ground of debris. The relief committee of Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre, under the aegis of its President, has committed to extend our helping hand to the most deserving and worst affected families of the recent unprecedented flash flood. The Government of India, State government and other agencies, including the army and paramilitary forces, are providing basic requirements in the form of food, clothing, temporary shelter in the form of tents, medicines, etc. Immediate needs therefore are taken care of and we now need to focus on the long-term rehabilitation and rebuilding of the displaced families.

As service to the community is one of our important objectives, we also participated in similar emergency relief projects and rehabilitation programs in the Gujarat Earthquake in the year 2001, the Kashmir earthquake in 2005, and the flood in Ladakh in the year 2006, where we helped with construction of houses and livelihood means in the affected villages. We feel that the most useful and urgent is to construct houses or shelter for the most affected families before the winter sets in. All the relief work will be carried out with consultation of the local government authorities in the areas beyond Mahabodhi. This time also, whatever little service we can offer, is our sincere wish.

Besides reconstruction of the affected infrastructure of our own organization, we wish to help other affected areas too. The Old Aged Home, girls hostel, hospital and plantation and agricultural land at the Mahabodhi campus have been affected.

Recently some of the more senior students have moved to university studies and sponsors are welcome to assist throughout their higher education. Senior students from Ladakh are pursuing their studies in Bangalore and Chandigarh with residence in hostels. Several have recently returned to assist at various Mahabodhi programs. The Mettaloka Youth Center in Mysore houses 51 college students attending various campuses.

Education often spills over to provide an entire impoverished family with an improved standard of living as new possibilities of jobs become available for one of the members. Costs of higher education are rising here, as everywhere, and any assistance for these serious students would be greatly appreciated.

Women’s Literacy Project

Education for girls was unknown in Ladakh until 1992 when MIMC opened the first girl’s school and hostel. Women were uneducated at the time and so they were not candidates for any jobs involving reading and writing. The Women’s Literacy Project works to open the opportunity locally to village women who desire to learn these skills. Traditionally they were mainly confined to household and agricultural work. As Ladakh moves from an agrarian lifestyle into one more resembling the modern commerce, we believe it is important to offer this educational chance opening doors to jobs and new futures. Recently 5 centers were closed because they had been in operation for 5 years and 4 new ones opened in different villages in Ladakh.
